How we increased technology capital for over 30,000 children in 18 months

A case study from Tech She Can

Technology is in all aspects of our lives. Almost every role is now a ‘tech role’ in some sense. We don’t know what the jobs of the future will be; 65% of children will do jobs that currently don’t exist. But we do know that technology and tech skills will be increasingly key.

At Tech She Can, the tech careers charity, we’re on a mission to ensure that the world looks, thinks and feels like all of us. Just 3% of women say a career in tech is their first choice; only 10% of leaders in technology are women. So to ensure that women are equal in creating and developing the new tech businesses, products and services, access and inclusion is vital. We need all children to be able to participate in the jobs of the future, and be inspired to do so. We need to educate and excite all children about technology, and the people who develop it, from an early age - before stereotypes set in.

A lack of relatable role models is often cited by women and girls as a key reason for not pursuing a career in technology. Our role-model video collection features young early and mid-stage career women showcasing their roles and organisations: what they do, how they got there, and why they love it. Through our Careers Insight Days we’re opening doors - giving girls and teachers an immersive experience behind the scenes of global tech organisations.

We’re particularly focused on reaching underrepresented groups, children and young people in social mobility ‘cold spots’ across the UK - delivering inspirational and relatable tech careers education featuring diverse, predominantly women in real-life tech roles. Through regional programmes, a national volunteer Champions scheme, tailored resources, early careers education (from age +5 yrs) and inspiration at the pre-GCSE options age, we’re making a  difference.

In 18 months, our Tech We Can free schools’ programme for girls and boys has reached +30,000 children across the UK, inspiring them to pursue a technology career.

We’re changing children’s perceptions of tech roles, giving access to tech career pathways, connecting their passions to STEM, and raising aspirations. And in doing so, we’re investing in growing a diverse and healthy tech talent pipeline for the future.
